Montague was catatonic. He sat in his chair, staring at the wall in front of his desk without seeing it. Louis Champlain had just left his office after a private meeting. The story the Frankish Knight had related to him made no sense. The story Simon of Grenoble had told him made no sense. Meredith had been totally incomprehensible. Love potions! Strangers building fires in marble fountains. Goblins fighting with a woman who looked like Nicole, but called herself Andrea Larmenius. Larmenius. Larmenius. The name rang in his head like a brass gong. And what of Nicole? Meredith had said that Lucio had mistaken the woman for Nicole Ramsay, but he had not seen Nicole Ramsay in two days. She was not on the estate. It was very possible that she had gone down to Baldock. He had called Luke Andrew and asked him where his sister was, but Luke told him that he had not seen her in two days or more. Meredith’s condition was very bad. She had taken to her room and would not come out. He thought it quite possible that it was Meredith who had been mistaken about Nicole’s identity. It would make sense that, if Nicole was trying to spy on them or had some other motivation for turning up in Baldock, she would not have used her real name. Furthermore, he knew exactly who this Madame Reshki had to be. Reshki. Not Gayle, but Gale. Ereshkigal. The powers of darkness loved to use these little plays on words and names. He was further angered that Lucio Dambretti had failed to recognize the danger. Louis, he could excuse. The Knight of the Golden Key had very little experience with the creatures from the underworld, but Lucio had no such excuse. Monty needed more data.

But he was without his historian. Armand had never returned. They had found no trace of the golden Knight and Lavon was champing at the bit to mount a search for him in the underworld. Not again! Not again! He would simply not have it. He had warned Lavon that if he went to the underworld, he would be court-martialed, ex-communicated and booted out of the Order for good if not executed outright. The Seneschal had called St. Patrick’s and conferred with Sir d’Brouchart on the matter. Sir d’Brouchart had spoken to Lavon on the phone and the apprentice had agreed to wait, agreed to abide by Montague’s orders until something could be decided. But when the little party had returned from Baldock without the Golden Eagle, they had had to physically restrain Lavon de Bleu. He had lost his uncle and then his Master and his grandfather had not been heard from. He was now confined to his room with a guard posted outside his door twenty-four hours a day. If they did not hear something positive soon, Montague was going to turn the Order over to d’Brouchart and resign his position as Seneschal. There were only seven of them left now.
